I am always a big fan of a heavy bottom end swirled with lofty vocals and great six-string work, especially if done correctly. The new EP from Ignescent points in that direction. Disc opener and recent single “Remnant” is a head on display of thundering bass lines that support some great vocals that feature range runs at times and some cool riffs and guitar melodies that swirl nicely in the mix. The layered background vocals add depth at the bridge and keep the track flowing. “Better Left Forgotten” unfolds with more of the droning bottom end and heavy-handed drumming that are often overlooked. The vocals kick in along with the guitars and we are given a different angle of the band musically, with cadence and tempo that have slowed from the opening track, but without losing any power and energy. “Anymore” has a modern rock radio opening and sound that features the guitars prominently through the intro and into the bowels of the song. Even the vocals seem to take on a different sound and vibe. The band comes together perfectly at the chorus and we get a sonic glimpse at Ignescent’s version and interpretation of a power ballad and it’s good stuff. Disc closer “Final Fight” takes us back to the heavier sound with reverberating bass lines, hard hitting drums, guitars that come straight at you, and vocals that seem to tie all the different sound together while offering up different textures through the verse and choruses. I hope the band is able to tour this so they can road test the material and flesh pout more music that builds on this base.
