On an overcast Saturday evening in Florida, I made my way to Jannus Live along with a SOLD-OUT crowd to witness the first of two shows this evening from Samantha Fish. After getting in and set up, I could feel the anticipation building until the moment she took her place on stage along with her rhythm section. Let me premise this review with “HOLY SHIT!” I think I just found another favorite artist. Some of the songs I recognized, including opener “Road Runner.” From the minute she started cranking out notes, run she did. She delivered song after song with little banter, but a load of licks, energy, and groove. There is something about her performance that struck me last night and rings through now as I put this review down and listen to her latest release, Kill Or Be Kind. Watching her play, sing, and control the flow of the show I watched the perfect storm brew on stage… Samantha is equal parts Beth Hart, Nita Strauss, and Nancy Wilson of Heart. From the opening track through to the end of the set, she was perfectly supported by bassist Ron Johnson and drummer Terrence Higgins. The pair took a short break midstream of the set when Fish stripped back the music and treated the socially distant capacity crowd to an acoustic solo mini-set that differed only in sound, not vibe or quality. Samantha also rocks when unplugged! The crowd was into each song and her smiles between riffs and vocals demonstrated she and the fans were on the same page and were digging the show together. The songs flowed from sound system and washed over the crowd and along the way, everyone was given at least a few songs to enjoy, but as I watched from the back of the venue watching women dance, men doing their best air guitar, and everyone coming together to help with the vocals, it was obvious to me I was behind the curve, as a packed Jannus Live already knew how good this was going to be. As she prepared for a second show of the evening, we all made our way into the evening with a song on our lips and a feel-good vibe wrapped around us.
