Steve Hackett is a guitarist that a lot of people know by name, but even know more by catalog and history – he is the guitarist that put Genesis on the map back in their infancy and inception. Splitting the evening into two sets, dedicating part to his solo catalog and part to his legendary contributions to Genesis, Hackett treated his fans to some seminal recordings. The first set was his personal Best Of from two if his biggest albums, Spectral Mornings and Defector, with a couple newer tracks tossed in for good measure. While the classic albums got treatment from select tracks, my personal favorites were the two newer tracks – “Under the Eye of the Sun” and “Beasts in Our Time” – which provided a one-two punch right after the set opener. These tracks seemed to embrace his prog rock roots with some modern rock highlights woven into them. Spectral Mornings was well represented with set opener “Every Day,” “The Virgin and the Gypsy,” “Clocks – The Angel of Mons,” and the title track. The remainder of the opening set was highlights from Defector, which included “The Steppes,” an acoustic rendition of “Jacuzzi” and “Slogans.” The second set was Steve’s tip of the hat to the Genesis classic, 1973’s Selling England By The Pound played song for song as well as a couple of his other favorite tracks from his tenure in the band. After the eight song tribute to the disc, he added “Deja Vu” and “The Musical Box,” with an encore of “Watcher of the Skies.” While he may not have lasers, pyro, and other flashy stage antics, what Hackett does have is an ability on the guitar that few have demonstrated over the decades. He still plays with the emotion and care to each note of each song and aims to please, not only the crowd, but himself. This tour is not one to be missed by fans of Hackett, Genesis, and prog rock.
