The Indy 500’s Snake Pit got off to an early start with doors at 7 a.m. and the first show at 7:15. The infield area once synonymous with mayhem in the 70’s and 80’s has evolved into an all-day EDM concert series since 2011. The capacity has expanded to nearly 30,000 and was packed full by the last performance. The Snake Pit has brought a younger generation to the track many of which are now regulars of the Indy 500 experience. The threat of severe weather hovered throughout the day, but the winds of fortune spared Indy without rain for the day’s events. The heat was typical for May but the crowd was kept cool with regular drenching by the pit crew with fire hoses. The stage production included CO2 canons, flame throwers and streamers. It was a carnival like atmosphere. The fans were dancing and jumping to the beat as the bass shook the infield like an earthquake. An hour break occurred for the broadcast of the National Anthem and the green flag on the massive monitors. Grammy award winner Skrillex headlined with the last performance. He came out with a racing helmet embossed with “Snake Pit.” The crowd was insane as he mixed the beats. He kept the energy up for his entire set and despite the long day in the heat, the fans fed off his performance. It is wild time in the Snake Pit, and it’s great to see the new wave of fans enjoying the Indy 500.
