I have to admit, other than a few videos on YouTube and a press release or two, I didn’t know much about The Aces when I strolled into a PACKED El Club on a Wednesday night in Detroit. I started asking around about the band and what the draw was and while the answers all varied, the one recurring theme was that this was the favorite band of the moment for a lot of the people that jammed themselves into the venue. A little after their ascribed time to hit the stag, the quartet took their places in the dark and started off with a short instrumental that seemed more like a warm up than anything and saw lead signer Cristal Ramirez brandish a guitar to star tthe show, but to quickly lose it as the band rolled into the opening track “Put It on the Line.” Other than the lighting and the hazers (both a photographers nightmare), the show was great and the energy of the band and crowd were both electric and contagious at the same time. The evenings tempo and cadence was kept in check by bassist McKenna Patty and drummer Alisa Ramierz. Next up in the set was “Stay” and the audience wasn’t going anywhere as long as this band was pop-rocking the roof off the joint. “Bad Love” came kicking through the sound system and the crowd couldn’t get enough… singing, dancing, waving flags, and fist pumping from word to word and note to note. Each song featured cool riffs and some fun guitars from Katie Henderson. As the end of the third song was my queue to put my camera away, I hung out to check the band out and see what they could do with an entire set and they did not disappoint. Other songs I would come to know and dig like “Lovin’ Is Bible,” “Fake Nice,” and the debut album’s title track “Volcanic Love” dotted the evenings musical landscape. How did I come to know and dig certain songs with just one listen through in a live setting you ask? Well, this young foursome impressed me enough that I found my way to the merch booth and picked up a copy of the debut release for my own collection. If good time indie pop-rock is your thing, keep your eyes and ears open and be sure to check out The Aces when they hit a venue near you.
