Badlands Bar, Perth

Although this was not their first time playing in Australia, it was Monument’s first time performing in Perth, and their last show before jetting home after touring the east coast with Progfest. They were supported on the night by local artist Statues and Opus of a Machine.
Their set ran for about an hour and having played with Perth bands Voyager & Karnivool in the past, both bands were represented in the audience. It was a Wednesday Night at Badlands and the venue numbers didn’t represent their worth, I can only imagine that is because the band is still emerging here in Australia.
Vocalist Chris Barrentto starts the set apologising for having a limited voice due to illness. Except for short period off stage for a couple of instrumental tracks he performed amazingly, and you would never have known. They conducted their set with maximum enthusiasm and energy. Musically they are well established musicians and they deliver all their material aided by backing tracks to escalate the sound. I’m a fan, I have adored these guys for sometime, regardless I was very impressed by their performance and the set choices. The attending crowd knew these guys well too, embracing every tune.
Their latest album released last year, Phronesis – by definition it means personal wisdom – the band are committed to personal and professional growth, they share that message through their lyrics.
The set included tunes from all three studio albums including Mirror Image, Atlas, Dark Star, Leviathon, A.W.O.L, Quasimodo followed by an epic encore including Origin of Escape and Degenerate.
Hopefully Monuments will return to Australia and Perth again. If you don’t know them already – get on it. Its good shit aye!
