Frankenmuth, MI rockers done good, Greta Van Fleet scheduled a Detroit show to help close out 2018… and when that quickly sold out another was added… and then a third.  It seemed they could have gone on and on putting shows up for sale, as that third show also sold out, giving them three big shows at Detroit’s Fox Theatre between Christmas and New Years.  With camera and tickets in hand, I made my way to my second Greta Van Fleet show in about seven months and I couldn’t wait to see how the band matured since the last time I saw them and to hear the growth and excitement as they blended new songs from their latest release, October’s Anthem Of The Peaceful Army.  The band decided to kick the evening off with “The Cold Wind” from that release and it was hard to tell who was more excited to be in the venue tonight – the band or the capacity crowd.  Next up, Josh, Jake, Sam, and Danny took us all back to the basics when they played a trio of songs from their debut EP From The Fires with a killer rendition of “Safari Song” followed by the one-two punch of “Black Smoke Rising” and “Flower Power.”  The first of three diverse covers, John Denver’s “The Music Is You” helped show off a different side and sound to the band before “You’re the One” and  ‘”When the Curtain Falls” demonstrated the strength of not only Josh’s voice but also Jake’s prowess on a guitar.  As the set snaked its way toward the end with “Watching Over” and “Edge Of Darkness,” it is obvious how well the rhythm section of Sam and Danny locked in together and keep the set clicking along.  The band closed out the set, but the SOLD OUT crowd wanted more, and the foursome delivered with a powerful encore kicked off with “Brave New World” followed by their huge hit “Highway Tune” before breaking into Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ And Tumblin'”.  With the sounds of “Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)” capping the evening, everyone was smiles, from the Kiska brothers and their friend Wagner to the crowd that filed themselves out into the evening with a song on their lips and memories of a great show to help carry them through the rest of the holiday season in Detroit.  Be sure to check the band out next time they make it to your town… or country in 2019.
