An impressive international cast gets involved in a chase around the world in this fictional expose of a bank on the cutting edge of organised crime and espionage.
Clive Owen plays Interpol agent Louis Salinger, who partners up with Manhattan Assistant DA Eleanor Whitman when his partner is murdered directly after meeting with a witness who is considering blowing the whistle on the illegal activities of one of the world’s largest banks. Uncoincidentally, the next day the almost-whistleblower is also discovered dead.
The duo start unravelling the intricate threads of the bank’s illicit dealings, which include not only money laundering and arms dealing, but also illegally destabilising governments to further their own interests.
With exotic locations a-plenty, from Istanbul rooftops to an insanely destructive must-see shootout in New York’s Guggenheim Museum (or at least, a replica purpose-built in Germany for the film), The International is full of complex political intrigue and danger, and despite some plot flaws is reasonably thrilling viewing.
