10 Quick Ones with MAYA CRAVY of WEATHER KING – December 2018
According to a recent press release: “Fresh off a successful tour throughout Texas, an EP that garnered widespread play on digital and terrestrial radio, and numerous awards, including winner of the WILDFLOWER FEST! Battle of the Bands, Best Guitarist (Trent Cruickhshank), and Best Bassist (Jack Zukoski), 40,000+ spins on Spotify, and airplay on numerous radio stations, the band Weather King has released their second single, “Jejune Bug.” We get singer Maya Cravy to discuss new music, influences, and much more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
The lyrics are meaningful to me. You might not understand the first listening.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
I’ve been singing since I was two. My grandfather bought me a piano at 5 and I fell in love immediately.
3. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Gwen Stefani, Sara Bareillis, Haim, Adam Lambert, and Stevie Nicks.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
Haim
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
It’s definitely different. Maybe across between Prog Rock and Alternative Rock.
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
When I write lyrics and play it on piano. I love when it all comes together.
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
The parents!!
8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
I go to Booker T High School for theatre. I’m really getting into design and costuming.
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
Not yet, but I’m only 15.
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. It’s the first album that I listened to fully and loved every single song.
