For the last four years, Wendy Dio has organised a celebrity bowling party at Pinz Bowling Centre in the name of her late husband, Ronnie James Dio, to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer. Excitement was high as photographers and fans alike eagerly awaited to see who would be on the red carpet for this year’s event.
The first celebrity guests to grace the red carpet included Marc Ferrari (Keel, Medicine Wheel, Cold Sweat), Sonia Harley, Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), Bobby Blotzer, Terry Ilous and Greg D’Angelo. It was Jack Black, however, who would steal the show and he proceeded to charm the pants off everyone there – even being amazed and honoured when a few musicians told him how much his work meant to them.
Before long, Eddie Trunk came out and met with the winner of the eBay auction for a spot on the team to bowl with Trunk, Jack Black, Geezer Butler, Tom Morello, Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio, The Dead Daisies and Adam Jones (Tool, Melvins). Trunk asked the winner how his bowling game was. The answer was probably not the one that Trunk had been hoping for as he mentioned that his scores averaged around 99.
The red carpet was non-stop as the celebrities kept coming out. Calico Cooper, Chris Latham, Wendy Dio (who also posed with Dr David Wong who, in her words, was the biggest celebrity of the night), Al Coronel, Joey Vera, Gilby Clarke, Ahmet and Diva Zappa, Scott Warren, Rita Haney, Fred Coury and Stew Herrera amongst them.
As an Aussie in L.A for this event however, the star of the show was definitely Tom Morello who came out wearing a Cherry Bar shirt. For reference, the Cherry Bar in Melbourne is the place to go if you love your rock n roll.
With the red carpet event being over, the bowling started and there was a lot of commotion over at the station with Eddie Trunk’s team and lots of cheering as strikes were made, spares knocked over and the attempts to get those split pins down. Half way through, bowling was paused so that Wendy Dio could present a large novelty cheque to Dr David Wong and the University of California for a grand total of $61,000.00 for cancer research.
There was a lot of drinks to be had, many selfies to be taken and guitars (and stomachs) to be signed. Everyone there had big smiles on their faces and Pinz Bowling echoed with the crash of the pins and the laughter and good thoughts from every single person there. In the end, it really didn’t matter who won the bowling (though Eddie Trunk may have been spotted carrying a trophy out to the car). After all, the real winner was The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.
