10 Quick Ones with DANNY ROSSI of ONE – October 2018
According to a recent press release: “Fast-rising heavy rockers, One, had just unveiled their fourth studio album overall, All or Nothing. The Montreal-based band – which is comprised of Danny Rossi (vocals), Chris Staniforth (guitars), Phil Hardy (bass), and Sean Pothier (drums) – returned to work with producer Kevin Jardine (Slaves On Dope, Darryl ‘DMC’ Mc Daniels), who has produced the bands last three albums. “The band came in with some great songs, and we worked tirelessly to get them to the point that they sounded like you hear on the record,” says Jardine. “The band was open to expanding their songwriting and tones, to shape something that is very unique. There are not many times you get the chance to make a career record for a band, but this is definitely theirs.” We get singer Danny to discuss new music, influences, and much more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
The truth is, this album is very different from our 3 previous releases. The music is heavier and the lyrics are much deeper. Did we hide anything in there? Not that I know of! Honestly, after listening 2 or 3 times fans might be able to really grasp the lyrics. Each song is obviously telling a story but how it’s interpreted is up to the listener.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
I remember it like it was yesterday, I had an older cousin that introduced me to Mötley Crüe, he had a VHS tape they released called Uncensored. I was already digging the music and then at one point Vince Neil is riding in a limo up and down the Sunset strip except the back of the limo was an open hot tub with 2 hot blondes flashing everyone. That was the moment right there!!!!
3. Who would be your main five musical influences?
That’s easy… Motley Crue, Guns n’ Roses, Metallica, Aerosmith & Led Zeppelin in no particular order!
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Slash!!! I’m really curious to know what he would add to what we already got going on.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
Heavy rock with lots of groove and melody. Our music will take you on a roller coaster ride where you’ll wanna hit the gas pedal and drive like a madman as well as wanting to be at home with that special someone cuddled under a blanket watching a movie so happy to be in love!
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Playing Live… bringing the music to the people whether it’s the first time they’ve seen us live or die hard fans singing along to every song. Nothing beats the experience of being up on stage.
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Ask me something difficult!!! I do the majority of the cooking, after all I’m Italian! Chris has always got a guitar in his hands and Phil & Sean are busting out the booze.
8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
Haha… those who know me can agree I never shut up so I believe I would have made a great trial Lawyer!
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?
Na, I wouldn’t change anything. We could harp on former members or mistakes we’ve made along the way but truth is all that made us who we are. No regrets.
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
I have to say The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack by SIXX:A.M. The music and lyrics are so deep and haunting but it opened my eyes. It made me realize how deep lyrics can really be and totally changed my way of song writing.
