Baltimore’s pop-rock trio Skyward Story hit the Full Sail University stage for a few dates at the Vans Warped Tour this summer. They recently released a new song called “New Beginnings” to announce their signing to a record label and possibly hint at their successful future as an upcoming force the music scene. I sat down with vocalist Aaron O’Connor, Guitarist Scott Montgomery, and drummer Brandon Millman during their busy day at the Warped Tour in Charlotte to see what’s in store for them this year.

Rachel: You guys got the opportunity to play on the Vans Warped Tour this summer. How has it been?

Brandon: This is our second day, so we just started. We’ve still got that youthful energy. It’s funny, I walked in yesterday and saw some people we know and I was all excited! It was the first day of Warped Tour for us and everybody was dragging their feet like “ughhh, ughhhh.” (laughs)

Aaron: It was like they’d been here for years – you know, understandably so. But I’m having a blast. This was my first Warped Tour ever. I’ve never been there, I mean the first one I’m going to, I’m playing. So I’m pretty excited about that and it’s the last one. And I’m having a lot of fun.

Scott: We played in 2014 and 2015, I think we played like a battle of the bands thing and then we were a catering band for a whole year, but this is Aaron’s first time on the tour.

Rachel: Tell me more about the new song you guys just released.

Aaron: We released a song called “New Beginnings.” It is our fourth single off of our upcoming album, it’s just all about starting fresh, kind of brushing off the bad stuff, kind of what all our music is about when it comes down to it.

Brandon: And alongside to that, we announced our signing to Outerloop, which is for us a new beginning. So we felt like that was the best song we could lead with.

Rachel: So how long has Skyward Story been together?

Scott: Me and Brandon have been playing for like seven years now. [Aaron] joined the band almost two years ago.

Rachel: Tell me more about what your set is like for Warped Tour.

Aaron: So we’re playing six songs. We’re only playing one that everybody might know if they’ve been following us for a while. We’re playing one that nobody’s heard, since we’ve already released “New Beginnings.” I’m very excited for that one. Honestly, I’m just so excited to be on Warped Tour.

Rachel: What other plans do you have for the rest of the year?

Aaron: We have a couple more dates after Warped Tour, but we don’t have anything planned for right now. We’re just trying to work on some stuff for fall.

Rachel: Maybe an album?

Aaron: Maybe an album. Maybe. (laughs).
