10 Quick Ones with JUDGE PAGE of BROKEN TESTIMONY – June 2018

According to a recent press release: “Broken Testimony have released their debut album Holding On To Nothing with Thermal Entertainment today. The album is available now for streaming or downloading.  Founded in 2016 in the Upstate of South Carolina, by drummer Bryce Chism and lead guitarist and vocalist, Judge Page (both 16 at the time).  Broken Testimony has quickly become a popular 4 piece alternative rock/metal ensemble, playing multiple shows with both local and national acts throughout the Southeast after quickly gaining two additional members; Justin King (bassist) and Nic Delvaux (rhythm guitar).  The band has youth and the drive.   Judge (vocals/guitar), Nic (guitar) and Bryce (drums) all are 18 rounding out the band is Justin King on Bass (the elder of the band at 25).” We get Judge to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Most of the songs I wrote have a pretty personal meaning to me. So there’s a lot of little hidden things in the album that are metaphors people might not pick up on.  Overall I love for people to come up with their own interpretation.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I started playing guitar when I was 5.  I’m 19 now so about 14 years.  So I realized basically from the moment I could actually play songs that music is what I wanted to do in my life.  Jimmy Page and Slash definitely were my inspirations to start playing. I only got into vocals a couple years back, and I’d have to say Sebastian Bach, Layne Staley, and Benjamin Burnley are my vocal influences.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Sebastian Bach, Slash, Layne Staley, Ben Burnely, John Mayer

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Ben Burnley (Breaking Benjamin).  I feel like our styles would blend really well.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

We wanted to write something that people could listen to forever.  We decided to take a more modern rock sound and add a heavier tinge as well as a progressive wave to it to create our sound.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Getting to put my feelings into music. Watching it all fall together to create a song.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Ha-ha, well we mostly just go out to eat.  As for the acoustic?  We all are always eager to be playing an instrument regardless of what it is.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I’d like to take up tattooing. I’ve always been obsessed with art and tattoos in particular.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

So far no. Even though I’m sure there will be moments like that, I feel as if everything happens for a reason and if something was different it wouldn’t be the same today.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Appetite for Destruction. The first rock album I remember listening to and the album that drove me to become a guitarist.  It’s definitely my favorite album because of that reason alone.
