Trivium brought one of the best metal shows to The International’s stage last week. They came as support for Bullet For My Valentine’s latest tour, which is a lineup that has been highly anticipated. Frontman Matt Heafy is also one of the most recognizable names as both a guitarist and vocalist in metal, so the anticipation for Trivium to play in Knoxville created a lot of buzz in the music scene. Trivium began their set with one of their recent singles, “The Sin and the Sentence.” My only complaint is that their setlist was too short, but I do appreciate that they covered several albums and big hits throughout their career. The energy never faded, with crowd surfers taking full advantage of trying to get as close to the band as possible. Heafy also gave the crowd a challenge to be the loudest and best crowd of the tour, with Paris being the winner so far. In response, I believe Knoxville gave the band a very warm welcome. Other songs included “Throes of Perdition,” “Betrayer,” “Until the World Goes Cold,” “The Heart From Your Hate,” “Strife,” and “Pull Harder On the Strings of Your Martyr.” The show ended with “In Waves,” with another challenge from Heafy that somehow I’ve only ever seen at a Slipknot show. The band got everyone to crouch down low to the floor, waiting for the buildup of the song to blast into “In Waves.” Then, everyone jumped high into the air and rocked as hard as they could the rest of the song. Trivium definitely needs to return to Knoxville as a headliner and perhaps even in a larger venue so fans have more room for moshing, crowd surfing, and circle pits. This is one of the rare shows where just as many fans (if not more) were excited to see a supporting band, compared to the headliner. Since I’ve always been a fan of Trivium but never got a chance to see them live, this opportunity was enough to convince me that I need to see this band over and over again.
