Betty Who released one of the best CD’s of 2017 – and it totally flew under my radar. Once I discovered the disc full of pop and dance gems, I wasn’t going to make the same mistake and miss out on her show when they announced she was going to stop by The Loving Touch in Ferndale, MI just north of Detroit. With a couple openers warming the crowd up, the venue filled up quickly before Betty took the stage for what would hopefully be a great show. From the minute the openers finished, the crowds enthusiasm seemed to grow exponentially minute to minute until Ms. Who took the stage. As she explained later in the show, the stage and venue wasn’t large enough to accommodate her band and set-up, so she performed her show with a musical backing track. Listening to Betty song after song, I came to the realization that she belongs on a bigger stage in front of a bigger audience. The intimate show was amazing and her interaction with her fans was fun to watch, but her energy and enthusiasm were almost too much for a very packed Loving Touch. Taking a break from her energetic show and a ton of dancing, Betty grabbed an acoustic guitar and serenaded the audience for a couple songs. From top to bottom, including an amazing cover of “I Love You Always Forever”, my personal favorite “Wanna Be” from her 2017 release The Valley, and a brand new song that was released just days before the show, “Look Back”, she brought out all the stops and gave everybody a reason to smile and something to hum or sing all the way home. I only hope the next time I am checking her out live, that she is on a larger stage in front of a bigger crowd – where she deserves to be.
