In This Moment rolled through Detroit on their recent The Witching Hour tour and had three great bands supporting the effort: P.O.D., New Years Day, and Ded. The crowd was ready for a night of great rock and roll and the bands delivered. From all indications, Ded put on a great show and kicked the night off appropriately (damn day job – couldn’t get out and to the venue in a timely manner). Next up was New Years Day (PHOTOS), and they kicked things into gear for me and delivered a set that helped set the bar for the rest of the evening with a sound that fit perfectly on this bill. P.O.D. (PHOTOS) was next up and the crowd was more than ready for these guys to bring their new stuff and their classics to the stage. The band came out firing on all cylinders and gave the crowd exactly what they came for.
After a little stage conversion, the time was drawing near and as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” came blasting through the house sound system, the lights went out and the crowd responded with cheering, screaming, and of course, singing along! As the song ended and the lights slowly filled the stage and the band took their places, the crowds energy spilled over onto the stage and the music started. In This Moment – Maria Brink, Chris Howorth, Travis Johnson, Randy Weitzel, and Kent Diimmel – has been recording and touring for a long time and have their process down to a science. Ms. Brink goes through at least 8 costume changes while Howorth and Johnson rotate for the front spot to her right. Blending songs from their last couple releases, the band was on fire and frontwoman Maria was definitely on top of her game (having seen them now three times in one year, this was one of the better shows). From the opening notes of “Blood” until they closed out with “Whore” – both from one of my favorite ITM discs – they treated their fans to a set full of killer tracks, a cool cover of “In The Air Tonight”, a piano-based ballad, and a fun medley that saw the guys come together and jam on some classic rock tracks demonstrating their individual and collective grasp of rock and metal. If you haven’t seen the band on this recent tour swing and their are still dates coming up in your area, make sure you get there and witness the fun night that this group has in store for you.
