If ever you’ve fancied seeing a “man who looks like a Viking dancing in a comedy way,” then get thee to Dave Callan’s Every Video Clip Ever show at Fringe World post haste!
Inserting himself into “Every Video Clip Ever” from 1975’s Bohemian Rhapsody through to now may seem a tall order for a sixty minute show, but rest assured that this manically paced show does a damn fine job of cramming a few dozen of them in, either cavortingly choreographed with four backup dancers who seem to be having as much fun with it as the crowd, or screening the odd pre-filmed clip on the video screen.
Callan is a hilarious cat, and he doesn’t stop at video clips and slightly overweight, panting interpretations of Beyonce and Swifty – oh no! There’s standup at Spudshed honcho Tony Galatti and Michael Jackson’s expense (among others), reflections on his student days and many a dodgy Perth nightclub, an expose of his part in Daryl Brathwaite’s resurgence, mondogreens (misheard lyrics), audience participation, and “half a Red Dot store’s” worth of props as he thrusts and jiggles to YMCA, Dancing Queen, Xanadu, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, The Way You Make Me Feel, “pimp shimmying” Love Is A Battlefield, and a whole lot of modern pop songs that I wouldn’t know from a bar of soap!
It all adds up to an essential, hilarious show not to be missed, and it’s running til the 11th Feb at Perth Fringe World Festival.
