Perth was Dillinger Escape Plan’s first stop on their 2017 Australian Tour and it has been widely reported that this will their final tour as they are taking an indefinite hiatus from the end of 2017. They have toured worldwide extensively for most the year and are finishing up in December with three shows in New York, so this tour is probably Australian fans’ last chance to pay homage.
Perth Local band Forstora supported TDEP at Capitol Nightclub, and they were the ideal warm up for the main event. The venue was close to capacity from the start and after a short verbal survey amongst the crowd, it was not surprising to discover that turn out was equally there for the intensely brutal Forstora as for Dillinger, some having never seen either act, the conversions ratio would have been interesting to see. Forstora raised the heat and momentum, the atmosphere couldn’t have been created any better.
With Dillinger playing a carefully constructed set list the show had been rigorously rehearsed throughout the tour. The venue sound was all consuming for the 90-minute show. It was hard not to be impressed by the league of Perth fans fully interactive with the band, Dillinger seeming quite at home in Perth.
They played the entire set with relentless energy, guitarist Ben Weinman jumping fearlessly on top of amps in an exhibition of physical prowess, winding up hanging from the lighting rig after the encore.
Frontman Greg Puciato didn’t do the usual crowd/band banter bullshit that makes any regular gig punter cringe, but he still managed to connect to the crowd and make it personal, throwing the mic out for the last bars of Milk Lizard. That particular punter was local bassist Michael Williams, who nailed his short stint singing, and impressed the man himself. The crowd carried Greg across the venue to the bar for the finale, where he took his time to again connect with as many fans as possible before travelling back to the stage over the heads of a sea of happy faces.
Dillinger rocked Perth, with a crowd consisting of probably 50% who were avid musicians themselves, and thus not easy to please. You nailed it and we Thank you.
