10 Quick Ones with JOE of EVIL INVADERS – October 2017

| 24 October 2017 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Belgium’s Technical Thrash/Speed Metal young bloods EVIL INVADERS are proud to release a brand new video clip for “As Life Slowly Fades”, off their upcoming album Feed Me Violence. This new Extreme Metal opus was released on September 29th via Napalm Records worldwide!” We get singer / guitarist Joe to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Feed Me Violence is our second full length record and shows that Evil Invaders is more than just a Speed/Thrash metal band. There’s a lot of variation throughout the record and as you listen to it you will quickly understand what I mean. It’s like a journey with a lot of up’s and down’s in vibes between the songs but also in tempo’s within most of the songs. It’s far more elaborated than anything we’ve done before. And of course that goes hand in hand with a lot of details! Since the new songs are more complex they needed to have the right effects on the right moments to make the songs really come alive. I think the best example of a lot of shit happening in a song on this record would be the last song on the album “Among The Depths Of Sanity”. This one has a lot of acoustic parts, tortured screams, heavy drum sections and it’s probably the fastest song we’ve ever written. Try to dive inside of the story and step into a wicked roller-coaster ride through mental hell… This one is pure horror.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I don’t think there was a certain switch in my life that suddenly made me want to be a musician. I started listening to metal intensely when I was 7 years old. I have always been a person that lives in “the now” more than one that focused on future plans. I just enjoyed listening to music and sharing it with my friends. Watching live gigs (live or videos) and spinning vinyl was a big part of my life. I started playing the guitar when I was 12 and just jammed with my cousin for years before I actually formed a band. It was more expressing things through sound than actually being a musician to me. It just grew onto me.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Motörhead, Exodus, Crimson Glory, Savatage, Mercyful Fate. These are some bands that you can crank up at any time and it will give me a fucking boost!

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I’m quite curious on how King Diamond would approach our music. Which parts he would change and how his input would influence our sound. This guy has such a unique way of writing music and the way he brings it is just pure magic. I really wonder what would happen if we could work on music together with him!

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

We play a combination of Heavy, Speed, and Thrash metal that is also influenced by the early death metal bands. It’s melodic but also very wild. There’s a nice combination of different styles and influences. I’d say our music is inspired by the energy the old bands from the 80’s had but it is played in a way that it’s still fresh and new. It will remind you of a lot of things but at the same time sounds very honest and unique.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Doing what you love doing while being surrounded by cool people. Touring and going to weird places I would never get to if I wasn’t in a band.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Hahaha we’re not like that! The time we spend together is always about the band. We tour quite a lot so we’re already constantly together. We  just see each other at  rehearsals or at gigs and then we just have drinks. Joeri always brings his speaker to crank up some RNR if the surroundings get too boring but we’re not really the kind of singalong-song dudes. We just scream along to our favorite tunes when there’s a party!

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Apart from playing music I am a Luthier. I’ve got my own company in custom guitars called J-AXE GUITARS! So that’s something I would be doing full-time if I wasn’t in this band.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Well we’ve had some difficult times along the way but I think we managed to handle every one of them pretty well and managed to keep this shit going. I believe it just made me stronger so I’ve got no regrets!

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I’d be part of the recording of Transcendence from Crimson Glory. It’s one of my all-time favorite records. I’d like to witness Midnight recording his vocal parts and see the entire mixing process! There are so many things happening in this record and these guys really managed to create a magical and very variated masterpiece. It’s also one of the few artists I never managed to see before his death.
