10 Quick Ones with GEORGIJ of RUSSKAJA – October 2017
According to a recent press release: “RUSSKAJA celebrate their so-called “Turbopolka”, combining open-minded passion with various styles of music from all around the globe! Their brand new album Kosmopoliturbo is out this now on Napalm Records! Today the band delivers another kick-ass music video for the track “Alive”.” We get vocalist Georgij to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
I’ m sorry at the beginning for my broken English! Yes, we have big nuggets this time, first time we use some electronic parts, we have a nice Italo-Chanson, we have some really hard stuff mixed with our typical offbeat-Brass-grooves.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
I started to sing in USSR as a child in a pioneer Choir, I learned in Russia Fortepiano and in Austria I teached to myself guitar, I always wanted to do music, at the beginning I was part of some metal bands and in the year 2004 I founded the Project “Russkaja”, now we tour across Europe and we are looking forward to come one day to USA and present our music!
3. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Freddy Mercury (Queen), Victor Zoi (KINO), Gogol Bordelo, Dubioza Kollectiv, and Led Zeppelin.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
Great would be to have collaboration with Justin Beiber.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
It is a turbo-polka-brass-ska-rock-healing!
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Making music and having a vent to release all the troubles that are collected during the life.
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
I am the cook and room designer, our guitar player Engel Mayr is the one who take guitar and plays everything you can imagine in a very beautiful way, and we drink dependinge on situation, sometime more, sometime less.
8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
In my past I was working as carpenter, I like working with wood, now I still build some stuff myself from the wood. Other option would be managing other bands, after so long time in this business I know how it works.
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
No, every missteps is learning process and that’s why very important to come through. We had some changes in our membership and with every change I learned something new about who I do right with the people.
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
For me would be interesting to be present during the composing sessions of my musical gods like Queen, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple.
