LIVE: THE FLAMING LIPS– September 19, 2017

The Flaming Lips do not put on mere concerts, but rather a psychedelic trip akin to Alice in Wonderland. Each song is accompanied by a theatrical theme for nonstop sensory overload. The band is out on tour supporting their 14th album, Oczy Mlody. Showing no signs of slowing down, Wayne Coyne and company continue to push boundaries and reinvent their sound. Having seen them years ago, I was anxious to see what new tricks they had up their sleeve.  They took the stage as “Also sprach Zarathustra“ (best known for use in A Space Odyssey) played in the background. This was Coyne’s opportunity to get the crowd worked up into a frenzy as he played conductor.  Balloons and confetti highlighted the next song “Race for the Prize.“ A massive inflatable pink robot was put up for “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” Their trademark F*ck Yeah Indianapolis silver inflatable was then waved overhead.  Coyne next took a ride out into the crowd on a mechanical unicorn with its rope lighted mane and rainbow colored wings.  He followed up with a giant metal gong, a crowd sing along to “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song,” of course the inflatable Zorb ball that he got in and went into the crowd singing Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” As the night winded down, the giant disco ball lowered as lights showered the crowd. CO2 guns were used liberally throughout the show both fixed on stage and handheld ones. There was no break in the onslaught of props, which complemented each musical piece. It was a well-orchestrated trip the Flaming Lips took us on and was worth every penny. If you haven’t seen them live, it truly is a unique and memorable experience!
