10 Quick Ones with JENNY MANN of BLAMESHIFT – September 2017

According to a recent press release: “Long Island, NY Hard Rock band Blameshift have announced they will co-headline a tour this fall with The Nearly Deads that will be sponsored by Strüng. The tour will kick off on October 12 in Stanhope, NJ and then conclude on November 2 in Nashville, TN. Blameshift premiered the music video for their single “Monster” through VEVO earlier this year. The video directed by Eric Schneider coined the hashtag #iamamonster, showing the dirty path of a dollar bill, making a monster out of everyone it encounters. The video now has over 121,450 views on YouTube.” We get Jenny (vocals) to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, her influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our latest release, Heart of Stone has definitely been my favorite music yet. It was the most vulnerable and honest I have ever been on a record. I think it might take a listener a few times to understand exactly what the lyrics mean but I think that’s a good thing. Sometimes lyrics are open to interpretation and the listener can use them in a form that applies to their own life.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I’ve been a performer my whole life. My mom said I was singing and putting on shows since I was able to speak. I started out as a kid doing live theater and I just knew that the stage was the only place I wanted to be. I always knew this is what I wanted.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

The Used, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Thrice, and 30 Seconds to Mars.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I would say Jacoby from Papa Roach.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

I would describe our music as high energy Rock ‘n Roll that you can sing along to!

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Everything is awesome about being a musician! Getting to travel, meet new people and connect on a very personal level is my favorite part. I feel lucky that I am able to do what I love and have people that love it too.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

That’s a great question. Well, our bass player Mike is definitely the one doing the cooking. He’s also the first one to get the drinks flowing (sometimes I beat him to it though), and Tim, our guitar player is the first one to crack an acoustic guitar out for a 90’s singalong.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I think I would be a radio DJ. I did it for a short time while we were between tours and absolutely loved it.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

I think there were a lot of moments that were definitely challenging over the years.This industry is hard but all those missteps lead to knowledge. Everything has been a learning experience and I feel like we needed to experience all of it to get to where we are today.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would have to say, Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory. This record was so unique and set the tone for hard rock music during the early 2000’s. I know a lot of bands who were personally inspired by that album, including us.
