LIVE: THE DEAD DAISIES – August 11, 2017

Some bands you simply will not miss when they roll through your town, regardless of your other plans for the evening and the venue they are playing.  With another bucket list show across town, I knew I could make both and so I set upon an adventure.  After a crazy rain storm and some furious driving, I made it to The Shelter (inside Saint Andrews Hall) and quickly met up with friend Marco Mendoza and the rest of the band for some friendly banter before their set and I made my way to the stage area to wait to see this band of rock and roll rebels and veterans do what they do best.

An added bonus this evening was an opening slot from The Dives.  This power pop rock band based out of New York rocked the venue and all inside with their blend of rock – including originals and a cover or two.  The band, lead by singer / guitarist Evan Stanley, captivated the crowd with their sound – which I remarked to the band reminded me of The Click Five.  Filling out the guitar sound to Stanley’s right was Mike Lefton, who played solidly from opening song to the last note.  Rhythm section duo of bassist Sergio Ortega and drummer Jimmy Meier anchored the set and sound with precision as the band moved from song to song.  Trust me on this one – if you like your rock with a little lighter groove and a classic sound, keep your eyes and ears open for The Dives – I know I am going to.

After a short set change, the time was here for The Dead Daisies to hit the stage and rock everyone that came out tonight.  Singer and frontman John Corabi took us from first note to last with his killer vocals that are an integral part of The Dead Daisies sound.  There is something so rock and roll about his voice that cannot be described – it needs to be heard to understand.  As the band pulled tracks from their entire catalog, but leaning heaviest on the latest studio release, all will promoting a new live disc, the setlist was full of killer originals and quite a few covers that have become a part of The Dead Daisies live show over the years, as well as being included on their albums.   Founding member and guitarist David Lowy helped lead the charge from his side of the stage, giving depth and tone to a lot of the song played tonight, taking a spot in the front for an occasional solo.  Across the stage, Doug Aldrich played his heart out dropping solos and plenty of pings and squeals in each song the band ripped through tonight.  One of the tightest rhythm sections playing today, bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Brian Tichy, kept things fun and flowing with thunderous bottom end and vocals compliments of Mendoza and an all-out assault from behind the kit that helped keep time and provided a ton of action during the drum solo (I can’t believe his hands still don’t hurt).  The songs flowed from the bands instruments, through the sound system, and washed over the crowd.  As fans sang along from song to song, the band delivered a show that wouldn’t be soon forgotten by anyone that came to see tonight’s set.  I could go on and on, but the bottom line is this: if they still have a date on this short run near you, grab some friends, some tickets, and enjoy a great night of rock and roll.  If they already passed through your town run out and grab a copy of their latest – the killer Live & Louder, crank it up, and enjoy the band in a live setting…
