10 Quick Ones with SAM MILLAR and TOM ASPINALL of BIGFOOT – August 2017

| 22 August 2017 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of the self-titled debut of one of their latest UK signings – Bigfoot.  The album will be released October 13, 2017. Bigfoot is a hard rock band from Wigan who burst onto the scene in the spring of 2014. With a wide range of influences from The Eagles through to Pantera, the group boasts the powerful vocals of Antony Ellis, dual lead guitars from Sam Millar and Mick McCullagh, plus the thunderous rhythm section of bassist Matt Avery and drummer Tom Aspinall.” We get Warden to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Tom: Our latest release is called “Tell Me a Lie.” The fact the cowbell is played through the first verse is purely down to fans constantly telling me “we need more cowbell!!”

Sam: The album as a whole is pretty reflective of our previous material in general but with having a full album we’ve been able to throw a lot more of our influences in and use other instruments and go a bit mad, particularly on the last track of the album which has a lot of strings and choir sections.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Sam: I always liked the idea of being a guitarist from an early age. I can’t pin point a specific moment but I remember listening to Hendrix & Richie Blackmore as a kid and falling in love with it.

Tom: A huge part of my parents life was music and my dad was a drummer too so he was my main influence. Also hearing “Highway To Hell” on a Simpsons episode when I was about 8.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Sam: Brian May, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather & Jimi Hendrix

Tom: John Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Scott Travis, Tommy Lee, My dad

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Sam: Prince

Tom: Justin Hawkins

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Tom: Stupid, a bit brash, noisy and a lot of fun.

Sam: Chuggy rock music with camp chorus’s.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Sam: Travelling and people thinking you’re really cool when really you’re all a bunch of nerds.

Tom: I don’t know, I’m the drummer.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Sam: Well Mick is an expert at making pot noodles, Tom is constantly shouting “SHOTS FOR DA BOYS!” and Ant is definitely the one with the acoustic guitar.

Tom: Everyman for himself, get your own beer, get your own food and I’ll meet you over there. Mick is the pissed up acoustic shredder.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Sam: A Drummer…. Or a pimp.

Tom: A plumber…

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Sam: There’s a few that we probably shouldn’t mention but in hindsight there’s a lot of things we could have changed for the better but I guess they all made us whatever we are today.

Tom: I would like to have not fell over and broken my hand on tour and having to play drums the last night with it.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Sam: Probably Hysteria by Def Leppard. It was one of my favourite albums growing up and still is, the production is phenomenal and I’d just like to see how that all happened from start to finish. I believe it took around four years!

Tom: Shout At The Devil to see if the 80’s was really as ridiculous as everyone tells me, it was probably the first record I ever loved.
