10 Quick Ones with ALEXANDRE CASTELLAN of SIRIUN – April 2017

| 22 April 2017 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Unleashing a furious and blistering sound bred from the union of varied creative metal borne winds, Brazilian metallers Siriun have persistently drawn eager ears since emerging in 2014 and are poised to do so again with the release of their debut album.” We get founding member Alexandre to answer our 10 Quick Ones about the bands most recent new material and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

There are many layers and nuances in the songs that listeners may not notice the first time or second time around. You may need more hits in order to catch all the song depth.. There are no hidden nuggets in this album… maybe one.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My grandfathers and my uncle introduced me to classical music when I was very young and my father also listened to a lot of 70’s rock. I always exposed to this great musical combination at the house but none one from my family were actual musicians. It wasn’t until my teens that I actually started to listen to metal and decided to take in the guitar. From that point there was turning back. I knew that I wanted to make this for the rest of my life.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

There are certainly more than five, but I can pick the most important ones. Led Zeppelin will always be a huge influence; I still get the same feeling listening to those records now from when I started when I was about 12 y/o. Megadeth and Testament were also huge part of my life during my teenage years. All that complex Megadeth riffs and that crushing heavy songs from Testament make them one of my main influences. Nevermore twisted my mind about the way a guitar should sound and more recently Gojira, they have a French finesse playing death metal, and for me they are the new metal legends.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Chuck Billy from Testament or Devin Townsend. Simply because they’re amazing!

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

A forward thinking death metal, heavy, with a lot of groove and some trippy acoustic parts.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The capacity to fully express yourself through your music.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

The drummer cooks, the bassist bring the drinks and I usually pick the acoustic guitar.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Probably a nature photographer or a cartoonist.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

I wish I could be able to begin Siriun earlier in my life, but it takes some time to get things where you want it to be, in terms of music, production and business. But I understand that everything has its own time.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Megadeth – Rust in Peace. It’s a metal masterpiece! Everything is perfect in that album, Dave Mustaine was truly inspired and Marty Friedman made some of the best metal solos ever on this record!
