Eamon Evans collects the stories behind Australia’s many weird place names – from the boring and inappropriate (Fremantle was named after a rapist, for instance), through those derived from various Aboriginal dialects (Mowbrdonemargodine in Western Australia apparently means “where the wombats fight”), to the absolutely hilarious.

There are some pearlers in there, too: Linger And Die Hill in New South Wales; WA’s Scented Knob; the ridiculous Eggs And Bacon Bay in Tasmania; and a personal favourite – South Australia’s Mamungkukumpurangkuntjunya Hill. As if wrapping your mouth around that one isn’t enough of a buzzkill, in the local dialect it means “where the devil urinates”!
