TEN QUICK ONES WITH… MARLON GERBES of SIX60
By Shane Pinnegar

What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realised you wanted to be a musician?

Queen’s ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ was my earliest memory of music. I obsessed over that song for a long time. I got obsessed witht the guitar around 12 and naturally that lead me into being a musician.
Who would be your main five musical influences?

Bone Thugs n Harmony, Metallica, Incubus, Shapeshifter and Jimi Hendrix
If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Paul McCartney

How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

A mix of rock, live electronic & reggae, all with an R&B singer.
What’s the best thing about being a muso?

Writing and playing live.
When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Matiu and I cook a lot. Chris definitely gets the drinks. Matiu cracks the acoustic out.
If you weren’t a muso, what would be your dream job?

Product Designer for Apple.

If you were made ruler of the world, what would your first orders be?

Everyone gets the same base income that is just enough to live. If you are top 10% earners, it is law to contribute 5% of all income to a select charity of my choice.
If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’ This is when The Beatles were at their best and the stories of the “good times” they had sound fascinating. Also their producer George Martin is legendary and seeing him at work would be crazy inspirational.
What, for you, is the meaning of life??

Stripping away everything you know you’re not. Discovering who you truly are. And practice being fully present.
