Bjorn Again live Perth 6 Aug 2016 by Maree King (15)

Agnetha Falstart, Frida Longstokin, Benny Anderwear and Bjorn Volvo-us (ably backed up by bassist Rutger Sonofagunn and drummer Ola Drumkitt) returned to Perth to celebrate the sensational Swedish glory that was ABBA – and in particular their fourth album, 1976 hit Arrival.

Tongue in cheek though Bjorn Again are, their musical delivery is spot on, and there’s no doubt that this is a tribute rather than a parody. The audience – similarly in thrall to the never-to-reform ABBA – lap it up, singing, dancing and screaming throughout a show jam-packed with big production lighting, multiple costume changes (featuring lots of the 1970s white ‘silky pyjama’ outfits we remember so well – which also featured prominently throughout the audience), and the entire Arrival album, as well as greatest hits and a few surprises.

Whilst Benny teased Bjorn – sporting a glammed-up flying star guitar – throughout, the band delivered note perfect versions of Waterloo, Kiss The Teacher, a bouncy S.O.S. which segued into The Police’s Message In A Bottle, Knowing me Knowing You and I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, all in the first act.

Formalities of replicating Arrival now (mostly) out of the way, Act 2 featured a trawl through the band’s greatest hits, as well as a couple of deeper cuts, a guitar solo from Bjorn which referenced both AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, and a hard-hitting drum solo, not to mention even more surprises.

Gimme Gimme Gimme featured a snippet of Madonna’s Hung Up (which might have fit better in Ring Ring, come to think of it), Rock Me, Fernando, Benny and Bjorn taking the lead for a rocking Livin’ On A Prayer, Money Money Money, Take A Chance On Me (which included Benny donning ‘street’ garb to rap a chorus), and a climactic Does Your Mother Know and Mamma Mia.

Of course they weren’t done yet – Bjorn Again’s performance of Arrival had omitted one very important song, and they tucked it away specifically for the encore: Dancing Queen, which had the full house on its feet dancing and singing, before a heartfelt Thankyou For The Music closed out the marathon show.
