City: Knoxville, TN

Date: July 19, 2016

Review and Photographs by: Jeffrey Everett

It had been 20 years since Garbage came to Knoxville and their return was long overdue. Despite it being a Tuesday night, there was a large crowd and a weekend vibe. It was a diverse audience with all ages reflecting the bands popularity in the 90’s as well as a new fan base from their new material. The current tour is in support of Strange Little Birds which was just released in June. Lead singer Shirley Manson was amazing. She admittedly had bit to drink before the show and was very engaging between songs. She discussed everything from Scottish and Tennessee accents, her salvation with Garbage and a music career, and illness of drummer Butch Vig who has not been able to tour. She went on to dedicate “Sex is not the Enemy” to the LGBT community. Her vocals still have every bit of strength and edge as they did 20 years ago. She prowled around the stage, was on the floor and reached over the pit to great their fans. Her band mates were equally energetic and they fed off one another throughout the night. After a nearly a two hour set, they took a short break, then concluded with a 3 song encore. They ended the evening with #1 Crush. The combination of a great performance and a loud energetic crowd, made it fun night for all!
