One of Australia’s longest standing rock bands, The Living End, returned to Perth in support of their new record Shift, which surprisingly is their first in five years.

While so many of their peers have fallen by the wayside over the years, The Living End continue to be one of the country’s best. Tonight was no exception.

The trio open with Monkey On My Back, a new song that has the characteristics and familiarity of what made this band so popular. Singalong Roll On was next, followed by Hold Up from the Modern Artillery record, before the punk rock fury of new track Death got the crowd jumping.

Hit All Torn Down was brought out early to showcase Chris Cheney’s awesome lead guitar work: I’ve said this before, but he is such an underrated guitarist, what a player!

A couple more new tracks were played in quick succession including new single Keep Running, and possibly you could say they leaned a little too heavy on the newer material tonight considering how much back catalogue they have. I’m sure the diehard fans didn’t mind, but casual fans may have missed not hearing some more familiar tracks. Saying that, I did really dig the newer material especially Death – a great tune, well worth checking out!

The last half of the set it was all guns blazing: Second Solution, Pictures In The Mirror, and of course the track that started it all, Prisoner Of Society, which has the magic to set people’s brains to go into a frenzy, before The Living End closed out the set with White Noise.

Of course, it wasn’t over yet, as the band encored with the kickass riffery of How Do We Know, then West End Riot, before finishing with Carry Me Home.

The Living End continue to do what they do best: they are a tight, well-oiled machine with a great back catalogue of well-crafted songs played with a no bullshit. What you see really is what you get – a great live band.
