Mental, manufactures and utterly pointless, Babymetal are J-Pop for legions of disenfranchised metal kids… but none of that has ever stood in the way of a band becoming a hit.

Metal purists will moan about the three teenage girls (Su-Metal, Yuimetal and Moametal) bouncing around in front of a faceless band thrashing out epic power metal… but are they so different from the likes of KISS, or even the Grammy-award-winning Ghost?

It’s just a gimmick, after all, and one which made perfect sense to their native Japan: looney teenage-Runaways metal appealing to sexual fetishists and boasting some pretty cool heavy rock with a few neo-industrial and dance tricks, they seemed perfect for the zeitgeist in the land of the rising sun.

Singing mostly in Japanese though, their worldwide appeal is a little more unlikely, but I do have to confess to digging it in all its Japlooney glory.

The songs are heavy, catchy (even in Japanese), and fun metal bubblegum – like Cycle Sluts From Hell dueting with Sigue Sigue Sputnik in a J-Pop karaoke bar gone rogue, or Tokyo Ghetto Pussy covering Helloween, Avantasia and Edguy. Sort of.

Give ‘em a try: you just might like them!
