Shit The Cow 67p EP

There’s not a band like Sweden’s Shit The Cow in all the world.

They play in their self-invented style & genre (scrapyard rock, a kind of stoner garage hybrid), have the worst band name ever, and consistently produce music which is confronting and artistic, challenging and compelling.

This, their fourth EP, is an ambitious affair, with first track In The Woods channelling the borderline agoraphobia we all feel out in the wild. Busy Day At 67p (from which the album’s title is lifted) is an angular, spiky, almost post-punk dirge that far exceeds my feeble attempts to describe it.

Pale Rider couples the minimalism of The Raveonettes with early dischordant-Bad Seeds aggression in a Wild West cowboy song, before King Of The Compound couples dry-as-a-bone stoner rifferama with a warm space-rock afterglow, and It Will Kill Us’s fittingly early-Pink Floyd-psycho rock perfectly accompanies its journey-into-space drama.

As interesting and exciting as all their previous releases, 67p may be ‘scrapyard rock’, but it could equally be labelled ‘thinkers rock,’ such is the pursuit of pure art at its core.
