Back when the world was young “heavy metal” was a far simpler beast to explain. Pre-thrash and grunge and nu-metal and mathcore, most metal bands – especially those lumped in with the NWOBHM movement – essentially played souped up, bluesey boogie with a barroom stomp and a fetishist’s preoccupation with the electric guitar.
Still fronted by original singer/guitarist Steve Zodiac, the three-piece can still be summarised as above, but there’s so much oomph and self-belief in the mix that Vardis don’t need the flashy staples that many other bands rely so heavily upon.
200mph (a reference to their 1980 debut album, 100mph) features four head-shaking rockers that roll ferociously: Jolly Roger, The Knowledge, Dirty Money and Move Along, plus a live take on The World’s Insane, dedicated to BB King and played with a fire in the belly befitting a far younger outfit.
It all adds up to a welcome return from these past masters in their trade, and hopefully will lead to a full length album soon.
