Indie rockers, The War on Drugs, stopped by Knoxville for a show as part of their busy US tour before heading out to Europe later this August. Formed in 2005, the band calls Philadelphia its hometown. They have recorded 3 studio albums as well as 2 EPs.  Last years Lost in a Dream was highly acclaimed and led to widespread exposure. Known for poignant songwriting, lead Adam Granduciel pours emotion and personal trials and tribulations into the lyrics. Other band members include David Hartley (bass), Robbie Bennet (keys), Charlie Hall (drums), Anthony Lamarca (guitar), and Jon Natchez (sax).  Fellow Philly indie band Hop Along got the night rolling with short set highlighting their new album Painted Shut set to release May 5. The War on Drugs took the stage by 9, to a standing ovation. They opened with Under Pressure, which lent itself perfectly to an extended jam session.  Adam was reserved with only a few quips back to the screaming fans. He let his play speak for itself. He is a very accomplished guitarist, displayed with fast chords and riffs injected into every song. However, there was nothing over the top. The band instead played in harmony, with keys, sax, bass and guitars working in unison. The result was simply beautiful music. Adam’s vocals are pure and reminded me a bit of Bob Dylan. The guys played for 2 straight hours, deciding to forego a break and encore. They were all business and the crowd showed their appreciation, on their feet and many dancing throughout. The War on Drugs are gaining momentum and I certainly foresee a bright future ahead. If you haven’t seen or heard them yet, check out them! You won’t be disappointed.
