Knoxville’s The Black Cadillacs returned home for the first time since their self titled EP release in February. Local favorites, their tunes are played on the college and new music radio stations in town. They tour extensively and are well known for their live performances. Having seen them many times, I was looking forward to the show and their new material. I can’t say the rest of Knoxville felt the same. The Bijou was half full at best. Lead singer Will Horton asked the few seated in the balcony to come down to the main floor to join the party. The small crowd gathered around the stage. To the band’s credit, the small audience was no deterrent. They played a spirited set including songs from The Black Cadillacs EP and their full album Run. They even included covers from the Replacements and Queens of the Stone Age. They gave it their all and sounded great. Their songs are perfect for extended jams with superb guitar play from Matthew Hyrka and John Phillips. Phillip Anderson was on bass and Adam Bonomo played the drums. Unlike their studio work which comes across a little soft, live they are true rockers. The fans that did make the show were fully engaged, standing, screaming and supporting the local group. I really enjoyed the show. I think the new EP is a solid effort with heartfelt lyrics and a bluesy rock sound. They are well kept secret that certainly deserve to get more national exposure.
