The Werks rocked The Concourse on an unseasonably cold Valentines Day in Knoxville. The quartet (Rob Chafin, Dino Dimitrouleas, Chris Houser, Dan Shaw) hails from Dayton Ohio. They began around 2005 after meeting at a local music competition. The Werks have four studio albums to their credit, their latest, Mr. Smalls Sessions was released in September. They have gained much of their national recognition, however, through open taping and trading of their live shows. The Werks are a jamband known for their improvisational style that crosses many music genres. They even have their own music and art festival, The Werk Out, held at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio. This year’s festival runs August 6-8; more details and preliminary lineup is available at http://www.thewerkoutfestival.com/site/.
After a short performance by electronic band Higher Learning, The Werks took the stage. The crowd was small, but that didn’t hinder the group’s performance. They played with energy and seemed to be having fun. True to form, songs were long jams with shredding guitars, screaming keyboards and spirited drum solos. They sounded great, well balance and not over powering for the small club. Each member of The Werks had at least one song that they were the lead vocalist on. That provided even more variety to their performance. As night progressed, the crowd slowly loosened up, and most were dancing by the end. Unlike most bands that play a set and return for an encore, The Werks had more of an intermission. They took a 15 minute break, then returned to play for another hour. The evening didn’t wrap up until 2 AM. The fans certainly were given a special Valentines Day performance!
