Twenty Questions with 100% ROCK MAG – Karl Munce, Mayweather – August 2014
By Shane Pinnegar

Mayweather 01
With their second EP, Take Back Everything, under their belts, Adelaide’s Mayweather are feeling the love from Australia’s pop-punk community. Guitarist Karl Munce drew the short straw to answer 20 high-powered questions from 100% ROCK MAGAZINE.
1. What does your live set usually consist of?

Our set list will consist mainly of the new EP Take Back Everything and a few from our first EP. We may even throw one off our demo in on occasion. It depends on the show.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realised you wanted to be a musician?

My brother actually got me into music. Not all music but mostly punk/rock. I can actually remember the first time I knew I wanted to play guitar: I bought Enema Of The State by Blink 182 and listened to it on my Dad’s stereo. I couldn’t stop listening to it! I borrowed my brother’s Yamaha guitar and played every day. I still practice nearly every day. You can never stop learning.
3. Who are your main five musical influences?

Tom Delonge (Blink 182), Quinn Allman (The Used), Mark Hoppus (Blink 182) Mathias Farm (Millencolin), Stacey Gray (Trial Kennedy). It’s not all about wanting to play exactly like them. It’s more about who they are and how I look up to them as musicians & songwriters.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

I’d have to say John Bunch from Further Seems Forever. His voice is just amazing!
5. Who would be your dream band, living or dead?

The Beatles.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

It’s hard because we have so many influences. I’d say a mixture of Millencolin, AFI, Taking Back Sunday and Rise Against. Punk-driven riffs with melodic vocals.
7. What’s the coolest thing that a fan has ever done for you?

Got our Bird Logo tattoo.
8. Any tips on how to keep in shape on the road?

Drink lots of beer and eat junk food [laughs]. Just try and eat as healthy as possible and walk around a lot. It can be surreal at times.

9. What’s the best thing about being a muso?

When people sing along to your songs. You can’t beat that feeling!

10. What’s the worst part of touring?

No sleep or a lack of it.

11. Who was the last legitimate rock star you met in person?

Bert McCracken from The Used. He is one of the best frontmen I have ever seen and a really nice guy.

12. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We all take turns in the cooking and getting drinks etc. Dan Morena, our guitarist is the first one for a singalong. He knows every word to every punk rock song ever made [laughs].

13. Which act would you like to just give up and go away?

Pitbull! Can’t stand him

14. What would the band’s superpowers be?

We can go from relaxing on the couch to performing in front of anyone in a heartbeat. And laser eyes. We all have them.

15. If you could make one band reform, who would you pick?

Matchbook Romance. They were such a great band and it was sad to see them break up.

16. For the tech-heads, what equipment do you use?

I use a Marshall JCM2000 Guitar Head and an Orange Quad Box. I play a Gibson SG and run a Boss Chorus Pedal.

17. If you weren’t a muso, what would be your dream job?

A Pilot. I think it would be so cool to be able to fly anywhere you want.

18. If you were made ruler of the world, what would your first orders be?

Bring a Taco Bell to Adelaide. I love Mexican food [laughs].

19. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would be a love to be a part of The White Album by The Beatles. Just to be in the room with those geniuses would be a dream – to see how they wrote their songs and where the ideas came from. I am a massive fan of timeless music and that album will forever be one of my favourites.

20. What, for you, is the meaning of life?

Happiness!
