The latest from High Spirits on the Hells Headbangers label is not what I expected from a band on that label. “When The Lights Go Down” opens the disc and gives the listener a peek into what can be expected from the entire disc. The cool riffs and throwback sound permeate the track and carry over throughout the disc. “I Need Your Love” carries the vocal groove from the previous track, but against a heavier bottom end. The riffs, while muted are full and help carry the track. “Reminding You Of Me” returns to the vibe created on the first track, with the guitars allowed to roam a bit from the previous pattern established. “Can You Hear Me” has a sound of urgency that lifts the track above others on the disc, as the guitar chugs along while playing at a lower register than previously featured on the disc. Disc closer “High Spirits” is a fun rock track that nicely wraps the record up, with heavy bass, full percussion, more than ample guitars, and great vocals.
“One Thousand Nights” has a classic 70’s rock feel to it that, if the guitars were louder and doubled, reminds me musically of a Judas Priest track, with a different vocalist. “The Last Night” has a hypnotic riff underneath the introduction that grabs you and doesn’t let go until the track is over. The vocals stand out on this track against the very heavy bass line that trapses through the verses and chorus. “Gone To Pieces” has a pop sensibility that weaves in and out of the verses and chorus, without turning into a pop song. The bass line and rhythm section anchor this track and give it a heavy sound against the lighter guitars. The intro on “I Will Run” sounds most unlike anything else on the disc, but it adds a little dimension to the track and disc. The vocals match well against the guitars and accelerated rhythm section. Where did these guys come from and why haven’t I heard of them until now? These guys delivered a solid rock record that needs to be heard by the masses.
