Shane’s Music Challenge: THE CURE – 1990 – Mixed Up
6.5/10
Well, it’s exactly what it says on the tin, innit – remixed versions of The Cure’s best stuff, and not being a huge fan of Robert Smith’s angsty lipstick abusers myself (apart from the more commercial singles) this is my favourite album of theirs.
Which is unusual really, considering how resolutely uncommercial I tend to be, normally. But hey, I love it and this is my game, so roll with it.
Lullaby brings out all the arachnophobic claustrophobia of the original (which means I often have to skip the song, being somewhat spider-shy myself), Close To Me and Fascination Street are lively melodic romps, emphasising all that is accessible about the band, and In Between Days and Never Enough groove their way into your heart nicely.
