Shane’s Rock Challenge: THE CULT – Sonic Temple
Shane’s Music Challenge: THE CULT – Sonic Temple
5.5/10
Often overshadowed by it’s breakthrough predecessor Electric, Sonic Temple holds up really well in hindsight, seeing the ex-goths honing their new AC/DC influenced arena rock to a fine art.
Their first album produced by Bob Rock, and featuring an iconic cover of guitarist Billy Duffy in quintessential rock god pose, Sonic Temple contains some of The Cult’s most loved songs – Fire Woman’s bombast, Sun King and Sweet Soul Sister amongst them.
It wasn’t all bluster and bravado though: Edie (Ciao Baby) was a surprisingly tender tribute to Edie Sedgewick’s disintegration within Andy Warhol’s Factory scene in New York.
