Shane’s Music Challenge: DANGEROUS TOYS – 1989 – Dangerous Toys
6/10
They may have set their camp up resolutely on the b-slope of the hair metal mountain, but Dangerous Toys had a lot going for them, not least one hell of a scream on singer Jason McMaster and a quirky take on the hair metal thang.
We all know that this sort of music needs an inherent sense of humour in order to work, otherwise it would be all bad 80’s AC/DC double entendres and addled C.C. Deville solos, right?
Well Dangerous Toys nailed that one on this debut record. On top of the standard sort of cowboy & mad-rooter songs (Outlaw / Take Me Drunk / Here Comes Trouble) there was some classic OTT-gonzo metal with their ode to erections, Sport’n A Woody, and the minor hit Scared, a tribute to Alice Cooper and their love of horror movies.
They’d go on to make a few more records, most of them almost good as this one.
