SHANE’S MUSIC CHALLENGE: COMPILATION – 2002 – THE DEVIL’S MUSIC
10/10

A collection that appeared as a bonus cover CD on the December 2002 issue of Uncut Magazine, this one is billed as “Keith Richards’ personal compilation of blues, soul & R&B classics”, and as such it’s a doozy of a ride through decades of classics and cult gems.

There’s not a dud to be seen, and as we sway from boogie woogie to blues to pop to country to the Delta to jazz to reggae, I’m reminded why the 60’s and early 70’s bands were so magnificent.

They were influenced by EVERYTHING that came before them, and it all seeped into their music to create new genres, new roads down which rock n’ roll could travel.

Nowadays we have guitarists who only listen to sleaze rock, or death metal: how’re they gonna create anything other than just sleaze rock, or death metal?

As will be obvious to any casual observer of my ongoing mission to listen to – and write about – all of my vast collection, my tastes are hugely eclectic, and Keef has compiled an alternative history of the ingredients that made rock n’ roll – and The Rolling Stones themselves – so great.

There’s no “best bits” here – how could I possibly rate Amos Milburn above Professor Longhair, or Robert Johnson higher than Howlin’ Wolf or Muddy Waters? Is Billie Holliday more important to rock n’ roll than Bob Marley & The Wailers or Al Green? Nope, this is a fantastic collection, all killer and no filler. Just check the track listing on the cover below!
