The Dead Daisies - The Dead Daisies CD

The Dead Daisies have made some headlines, touring America and Europe over the past few months with a dream line-up that includes Guns n’ Roses alumni Richard Fortus and Dizzy Reed, X-Pensive Winos/The Cult/Cold Chisel drummer Charlie Drayton and Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Jones.

The album was recorded by Noiseworks singer Jon Stevens and David Lowy and a team of session rockers, augmented on first single Lock n’ Load by none other than Slash, but despite all the big name connections, The Dead Daisies really is Stevens’ love letter to rock n’ roll, blues and soul and his pure joy at the music pervades the entire album. It’s the sound of a music lover creating something honest, fun, passionate and, frankly, excellent.

Tapping into the rockier side of Noiseworks, Stevens slides a hefty wedge of soul into the mix with his big, big voice in fine form, and there are hints of early Black Crowes, Seventies Rolling Stones, and a myriad of other great, organic, rock n’ roll bands. The retro feel to the album is reinforced by the cassette tape image on the inside booklet: these guys have been around a long time and obviously wanted to make a record that harkens back to those days when an album was a solid piece of music to be listened to in one piece rather than just a single to download, consume and forget about.

The logical next step is to see what the touring band could do with this template in the studio – and they’ve apparently already laid down a couple of tracks. That’s one to look out for in 2014!
