HELP PERTH FESTIVAL FIND THE SOUNDS OF PERTH

DCF 1.0

Perth International Arts Festival is calling for you to send us the sounds of Perth for our exciting new project, Between the Desert and the Deep Blue Sea: A Symphony for Perth.

What does Perth sound like? What are those quintessential noises that link you to this city? Is it the toll of the bell tower? The laughter of your kids running through the sprinkler? The crash of the sea?

From now and in the coming months leading up to the Festival, we invite you to send us your recordings and ideas of our city in sound.

From this starting point Tod Machover, composer and professor at MIT’s Media Lab (it was his students who were inspired to create Guitar Hero), will craft a symphony tailor-made for Perth, to be played live for the first time by Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carolyn Kuan.

Perth Festival Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway said: “Between the Desert and the Deep Blue Sea is about how one can take new technology and ancient storytelling and weave them together in a way that makes it relevant modern, exciting, forward-looking.”

“This is the next frontier for the arts, and if you were going to team up with anyone on the planet to do that you would go to MIT Media Lab and Tod Machover.”

Tod Machover is the head of MIT’s Media Lab, a centre of innovation, technology, ideas and creativity. Machover’s compositions have been commissioned and performed by many of the world’s most prestigious performers including Kronos Quartet, London Sinfonietta and the Boston Pops.

He has invented many new technologies for music, including hyperinstruments for some of the world’s greatest musicians, from Yo-Yo Ma to Prince.

Between the Desert and the Deep Blue Sea: A Symphony for Perth is an interactive musical feast that will form a fitting Festival finale but it needs your help!

Record your favourite sounds and check perthfestival.com.au for instructions on how to send them to us.
