Turbo 3D Movie

The conceit that a snail ingesting nitrous oxide could be a serious contender at the Indi 500 car race is at the heart of Turbo and, ridiculous as that may seem, Director David Soren makes the show work with admirable charm, inspiring animation and warm voice acting from the impressive cast which includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Maya Rudolph, Snoop Dogg (or is it Lion nowadays?!), Michelle Rodriguez and – most impressive of all – Samuel L Jackson.

The secret to making absurdist comedy like this work is by playing it straight, and by keeping this classic underdog story walk the line, they create a lovable winner. The only difference from your normal ‘young fella dreams of winning the big race’ story is that, well, this young fella is a snail!

Theo (Reynolds) spends his nights and days dreaming of his hero, French car racer Guy Gagne, despite the rest of his ragtag company of Gastropods – including his worrisome brother Chet (Giamatti) – considering him a liability. One day he ends up accidentally getting sucked into the nitrous oxide tank of a passing car and before you can say ‘Zippedy-doo-dah’, garden snail Theo becomes 200mph TURBO!

I won’t drop any more spoilers except to say it’s a fun ride to the finish line from here on in and whilst Turbo doesn’t break any records for most original storyline, it does what it does cleverly and with ample warmth and charm to entrance the younguns and keep the grown ups interested as well.
