OK Go Teams Up With Saatchi & Saatchi, Talenthouse And Bug To Discover Next Generation Of Filmmakers
(Los Angeles, CA) OK Go and Saatchi and Saatchi are challenging emerging filmmakers to create a music video for “I’m Not Through,” a brand new song from the GRAMMY®-winning band’s forthcoming fourth album. The OK Go Saatchi & Saatchi Music Video Challenge 2013 is in partnership with global creative platform Talenthouse, and renowned music video curators BUG, and is the third in a series of successful Saatchi & Saatchi competitions aimed at giving up-and-coming filmmakers the opportunity to create a video for a high profile musician or band.
Damian Kulash, lead singer/guitarist for OK Go, gave leading luxury storytelling platform NOWNESS the lowdown on the contest and the new song in an exclusive interview that was just posted today here. Kulash also offered filmmakers a bit of inspiration – a montage of Instagram photos he shot, set to the new song.
A judging panel – headed up by Kulash and comprising members of the Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Creative Board and BUG – will select 10 finalists from all eligible submissions received. Results will be announced on the Talenthouse website at the end of May. The Grand Prize Winner, who will be chosen from the 10 finalists, will be invited to spend a full week at Cannes Lions in June 2013. The winner’s film will be screened at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase. There will also be a People’s Choice Winner, based on a public vote. “I’m really excited to see what people come up with for the Saatchi & Saatchi Music Video Challenge,” said Damian Kulash. “Clearly, making videos is a pretty big part of our lives, but while we’re in the studio finishing our new record, our heads are exclusively focused on the songs. So, it feels right to let other people into the playroom while we’re not using it. It’s a good way to encourage people to go forth and make. A great idea is a great idea. You don’t need us standing in front of your camera to make a great video.”
A free download of “I’m Not Through” is being offered through the 12 Months of (Rare, Unreleased) OK Go program. Each month, fans who have subscribed to the band’s mailing list receive a free, previously unheard track from OK Go. For details and to stream the new song, visit here.
OK Go has been called “the first post-internet band” and is at the forefront of an emerging class of independent creative entrepreneurs making art that is both digital and physical. The band’s groundbreaking, multidisciplinary approach to music videos has netted numerous honors, including a GRAMMY, two WEBBY awards (including one for their collaboration with The Muppets and Sesame Street), a spot in a Guggenheim installation and a total of seven Lions from the 2012 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity – the advertising world’s most prestigious competition.
In 2010, the band founded its own record label, Paracadute, which has since released OK Go’s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky Extra Nice Edition and the live collection 180/365– both produced by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT) – as well as recordings by PYYRAMIDS and Lavender Diamond. OK Go is currently recording a new studio album with Fridmann, which is due out in early 2014.
