Anything Italian is tops in my book right now, as I prepare for ten days there next month.  Add the fact that a young Italian band has been signed to one of my favorite labels and I have already interviewed them in the past, and they instantly fill a spot in my musical heart.  Upon The Dawning is one of the better bands to release a disc in the metalcore genre in a long time.

‘To Keep Us Safe’ opens with “A New Beginning” and is very prophetic.  This discs beginning is certainly a new beginning and a new chapter in the genre.  The guitar work, along with the rotating growls and vocals really drive the track home.  It also sets the bar as far as this disc goes.  “Nothing Lasts Forever” is another track that really demonstrates this bands desire to make it and their ability.  So many of the bands coming out rely on the lightening fast guitar work, growling vocals, and head-banging rhythm section, but Upon This Dawning actually mixes up these components and creates songs and sounds that stand out amongst their peers.

Another favorite is “From Hell To The West.”  The layered vocals that open the track really draw you in and lead into some very aggressive vocals and growls.  The music is just as aggressive and adds to the track.  “Sons Of Venice” is another song that drew me in and made me pay attention.  These guys may be starting their adventure, but disc closing track “Vessel” is appropriate here, in that this disc is definitely their vessel into the future.
