You just never know where that next CD you are going to get is coming from.  Sunday after church my pastor says to me “Hold on, I have something for you.”  Am I in trouble?  Am I being recruited for a committee position?  He hands me a CD and tells me to enjoy.  I get home, sit at my computer, and get ready to be… I am not sure exactly what to expect or how I am about to be.  Listening to it, I will say this is not my normal fare… and I have no normal fare.  Garage punk has never been on my radar, but I will work my way through it and see what happens.

First thing I notice is a front man that relies more on his band and co-vocalist than raw vocal talent.  Once I get though the first track, the first fifteen seconds of the next track kick in and instantly remind me of “Rip Her To Shreds” by Blondie.  Lead vocalist Ian F Svenonius actually sings a little on this track, but co-vocals handled by Katie Greer are quite nice.  In most cases presented here, this seems to be the case.  The musicianship is a nice mix between fuzz garage and punk.  The players seem to have a grasp on their ability and what is expected of them and seem to deliver.  Another big difference between most discs dropping today and this is the use of mono recording.  It has been quite a while since I listened to anything NOT in stereo.  It might fit the band and genre, but I prefer the nuances of stereo.

Standouts in my opinion are the second track “Certain Kinds Of Trash” and “Nuff Said.”  The latter grabbed my attention due to the subtle instrumental pieces underneath the words of Svenonius.  I also liked “I’m Not Interested Pt II.”  This track is basically a jam that suits the band well and features the vocals of Ms. Greer early on in the track.  It’s different – and not quite what I expected when I walked into church last week, but thanks to Jim for one more example of not judging a book by its cover.  I guess the lessons really don’t stop at 11:00 am on Sunday.
