KUT Austin’s legendary Studio 1A has come out of the basement and into the light,
thanks to KUT staff and management, sound designers Harvey Marshall Berling Associates
and Austin’s own Big House Sound.

The new 72-seat Performance Studio 1A in the new KUT media center on campus at the
University of Texas features a glass wall which opens the studio to a street-level
plaza for public viewing of live performances from outside, with world class recording
and broadcast equipment inside.

“The Performance Studio 1A facility is just amazing and it will become one of the
city’s premier music destinations,” said KUT Music Director, Jeff McCord. “Our live
music capabilities will expand exponentially,’ McCord said, presenting up to 300
live performances a year.

Big House Sound installed and integrated the complete audio-video systems for the
new studios, which features a state-of-the-art DigiDesign D-Show console with PQ
monitoring system, a complete ProTools HD system and Adam S3X-H studio monitors.
Meyer M1D line array speakers and subs were flown in the performance room. An automated
Vaddio camera system enables studio performances to be routed to displays throughout
the KUT media center, all managed by Creston/SVSI controllers.

“We had a lot of fun, we got it done, it works great and we’re proud of it,’ said
Big House Sound’s director of installations, Zach Richards, pointing to the special
efforts of Big House Sound’s owner Rod Nielsen and project manager, Bob Beckstead.
